The buzz about the recent awards show was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a fresh Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer featuring intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words hints that the team might be crafting a more action-oriented experience instead of another tactical title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it kicked off the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, branching plots, and flexible progression—qualities that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs you can achieve with a distinct build with a personal story.
The series is also notoriously open-ended, letting players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be approached in diverse methods, sometimes in lateral fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is these creative systems that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can look forward to more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
